Top 5 TV action shows that became big screen movies
By James W, Sunday 22nd April 2018

When your favourite TV series is deemed a success by the networks they usually get a spin off series and every now and again, even a big screen version. These are now few and very far between so Hollywood has looked to TV hits from the past to re-invent or as they like to say, re-imagine these classics and bring the idea to a new audience.

Here’s out top movies that were inspired by TV shows. Do you have a favourite and which classic shows would you like to see given a new lease of life in the cinema?

5: The Avengers
No, not the one from the Marvel Universe but one based on a classic 1960s TV spy series which featured a suave bowler hat wearing gent named Steed and over the course of six series a selection of female side-kicks. It made stars of Patrick Macnee, Dianna Rigg and Honor Blackman and though it started off straight forward enough each series became more and more surreal reflecting the fashions and ideals of the era. The big screen version came in 1998 and was unfairly slaughtered by the critics. The film was hidden away when released and heavily edited which made some of the plot slightly confusing. Hopefully, in time a director’s cut will be released.

4: The A-Team
Created by Stephen J. Cannell and Frank Lupo and making a global star of Mr T (real name Laurence Tureaud fact fans) who played B.A. Baracus, The A-Team was a series with so much action it had to be censored during its initial run. Following the team of a special forces unit who had been court martialled for a crime they didn’t commit it was an adrenaline packed hour of stunts and catch-phrases. The 2010 movie version was just as energetic and like the Starsky & Hutch movie (See below) had a large injection of comedy. It didn’t set the box-office on fire but gave us a new Baracus played by Quinton Jackson.

3: Starsky & Hutch
With their red Ford Torino with its white flash on the side, Starsky & Hutch were the coolest cops of the 1970s. Played by Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul (pictured above) they cracked crime with the help of their informant Huggy Bear (Antonio Fargas). For the 2004 movie their roles were taken over by Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and Snoop Dogg and it played as a sort of prequel to the TV series. With more gags and more action, the movie did retain the heart of the series and although it never turned into a series of adventures, it was a noble effort.

2: Star Trek - The Original Series
Without doubt the most famous TV series to reach cinemas is Star Trek but it’s not number one in our list as we won’t be counting movies that contain any of the original cast as stars. Star Trek: The Original Series ran from 1966 to 1969 and launched its first movie in 1979. It had a very successful run but when J.J. Abrams was given the job of bringing the series back to life in 2009 he gave us a crew that reflected the series but also gave that all-important extra dimension. The new versions of the classic crew are examples of perfecting casting, especially Zachary Quinto who plays Mr Spock in the most logical way, in fact his performance is fascinating.

1: Mission: Impossible
Without doubt the most successful action series to have longevity in its re-imagining must be the Mission: Impossible movies. Based on the cult classic (catch it now on CBS Action) which ran from 1966 till 1973 which focused on Jim Phelps (Peter Graves) who leads his IMF team who use innovative technology to crack international espionage. Tom Cruise took the IMF team to the screen in 1996 and been there ever since with a sixth movie, Mission: Impossible – Fallout being released July of this year. The movies capture the essence of the original and though have far bigger budgets have done the impossible and kept the spirit of the series alive.
